"A Newtown Crossing resident reported that her 13 year
old daughter was recently followed home by several older teens
who attempted to follow her into the house. Fortunately, the
girl’s father was at home at the time. Residents should
be on alert and report any incidents to the police."
Residents
should be aware that in any community, events such as this can
happen. In all circumstances, any suspicious activity
should be reported to the authorities. Parents should speak
to their children about these dangers for their own safety as
well.
On
a side note: when I was a child growing up in Newtown Crossing,
I recall there being 'Helping Hand' signs in the windows of
many residents homes. It has been a while since I was
a child in the community, and I haven't paid much attention
to these signs, or as to whether or not they still exist. In
a scenario like the quote listed above, parents who extend the
offer of a safe residence en-route to the child's actual home
could potentially save the child from these dangers. I
encourage residents to discuss this matter openly in the forums,
and if possible, come up with a list of 'safe homes' where children
can go to if ever they feel they are in danger. I would
be happy to work with residents in creating a web page dedicated
to instructions on what to do when something like this happens,
as well as a list of homes where children can go when they feel
they might be in danger.
Sincerely,
Scott
